The Minnesota Timberwolves own the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft that takes place on November 18th.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are in an interesting spot concerning the top overall selection in the 2020 NBA Draft. Currently, they are projected to select one of the two main guards at the top of the draft: either LaMelo Ball or Anthony Edwards.
It seems as though the most likely option, at least currently, is that the team ends up moving the pick entirely. Sasha Gupta, executive vice president of basketball operations for the Timberwolves said recently that Minnesota would be “ready to pick” and that all options are open regarding the top pick.
The Minnesota Timberwolves finished with the second-worst record in the Western Conference this past year and, after trading for star point guard D’Angelo Russell, will likely be trying to make the playoffs this coming season. A rookie in an already weak draft class may not help as much as a seasoned veteran, nor does the top pick carry as much value as possibly trading down.
As we wrote yesterday, the Hornets are one team that may look at moving up, per Kevin O’Connor (Ringer) and Rick Bonnell (Charlotte Observer) . There are also other teams that have assets that they may be willing to part with in order to move up further into the draft, such as the Boston Celtics and New Orleans Pelicans.
Still though, it is unclear who the Timberwolves will look to select should they maintain the first overall pick. With no clear consensus top pick in this draft class, there are rumors swirling for both Edwards and Ball, but the more likely option seems to be trading down (or out of the lottery as a whole).
Gersson Rosas has shown no hesitation when it comes to maintaining an aggressive standpoint for roster construction, always targeting a good trade for the team.
