EARLY FIRST ROUND

Evan Turner (2nd pick), Jarrett Culver (6th pick), D’Angelo Russell (2nd pick), Karl-Anthony Towns (1st pick)

The Minnesota Timberwolves are picking with the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and have lots of talent that has been taken with high draft picks in the past.

Evan Turner has had nothing short of an interesting career. After being the 2nd overall pick in a strong 2010 draft class, he has been something of a journeyman, appearing in games for five teams, most notably the Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers. Turner is a pending free agent and will, in all likelihood, not be in Minnesota following this offseason.

Jarrett Culver struggled during his first full season in the NBA. Drafted as a ‘pro-ready’ player, he was downright bad, averaging nine points, three rebounds, and two assists on splits of 40/30/46 (yes, 46-percent from the free throw line). Culver was much improved as the season went along, but projecting what he could be in the future is an incredibly difficult task.

D’Angelo Russell was acquired in a trade with the Golden State Warriors before the trade deadline. He has been nothing short of impressive and is currently the second-best player on the Timberwolves’ roster. Gersson Rosas made it a point to make sure Russell was apart of Minnesota – and followed through with that goal. Having a high-level point guard alongside the franchise centerpiece benefits everyone involved.

Karl-Anthony Towns is the best offensive center in the NBA. He was the consensus first overall pick in 2015, and has lived up to the hype. Despite not ever having a decent team around him (with the exception of the Jimmy Butler season), Towns has been a two-time All-Star with one All-NBA selection. He is under contract for many seasons, and general manager Gersson Rosas will have to continue to build around him.
