Devin Vassell NBA Draft 2020 Prospect Profile: Fit with Timberwolves

Devin Vassell should be able to step into training camp for virtually any NBA team and immediately become a rotation player.

His size, length, and intelligence on both ends of the floor will play in any team’s scheme on both ends of the floor. For the Minnesota Timberwolves, that combination would make him a Day One starter.

Indeed, Vassell has a far better shooting stroke than any other candidate to start on the wing alongside restricted free agent Malik Beasley, who isn’t a guarantee to return. He will almost certainly be a better defender than Jarrett Culver right out of the gate, and his size would possibly allow him to take some of the tougher wing assignments and slide Josh Okogie onto some of the more dynamic guards.

The trickle-down effect of having Vassell on defense would give head coach Ryan Saunders the ability to hide the likes of D’Angelo Russell and/or Beasley within the scheme, allowing Vassell and Okogie to pick up the slack. No matter what, the Wolves are relying on a defensive improvement from Towns, and adding Vassell to the mix would only help matters on that end of the floor.

If the Wolves were to trade back and take Vassell in the middle portion of the lottery, he’d likely be plugged in as a starter with Russell, Beasley, Juancho Hernangomez, and Towns. He may initially come off the bench in favor of Okogie, but the starting role would eventually be Vassell’s.
