Saddiq Bey NBA Draft 2020 Prospect Profile: Fit with Timberwolves

Bey’s stock seems like it might be rising in recent mock drafts, although the highest he’s consistently mocked is right around the No. 10 pick. Some mock drafts have him going in the late-teens.

With the Wolves sitting at No. 17, there’s a legitimate chance that Bey could still be on the board when Minnesota is on the clock, but it’s far from a guarantee.

With so many capable 3-and-D wings available in this range of the draft, it seems unlikely that the Wovles would trade up to take Bey. However, his skill set matches perfectly with what the Wolves need, and some of the limitations that other prospects have might be more concerning to Minnesota’s front office.

If the Wolves managed to land Bey, he would almost immediately become a rotation player who can come in and play the 3 or the 4 depending on matchups. Along with Josh Okogie, Bey would be asked to guard one the most dynamic opposing wings, and Saunders would lean on him quite a bit on that end of the floor.

Offensively, Bey won’t be asked to do anything other than knock down open jumpers and run the floor hard in transition — two things that he shouldn’t have any problem doing from Day One.

Bey would immediately be the Wolves’ most well-rounded wing, with far more offensive upside than both Okogie and Jarrett Culver. He would be above Jaylen Nowell and Kelan Martin on the depth chart, and would likely have a shot at some of Jake Layman’s minutes, depending on what happens with James Johnson on the trade market.

Despite being only 21 years old, Bey would almost be a plug-and-play option for the Wolves in 2021.

Here’s hoping he’s there at No. 17. If he is, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Wolves nabbed him.
