Aleksej Pokusevski NBA Draft 2020 Prospect Profile: Fit with Wolves

Pokusevski represents the very definition of a boom-or-bust pick that could greatly impact the Minnesota Timberwolves’ future for better or worse. Ironically, his inherent skills fit the exact type of “small ball” play style that Minnesota is transitioning towards, despite the fact that he would be the tallest player on the roster.

Poku has the potential to space the floor with his perimeter shooting and run the fast break effectively alongside speedy playmakers like D’Angelo Russell. He could also improve Minnesota’s rebounding and rim protection without having to begrudgingly give minutes to a non-stretch big.

There may be a world where he could be a plus defense as a weak-side rim protector if he is surrounded by solid perimeter defenders. In theory, this is the type of player who could be the missing piece in the front court next to Karl-Anthony Towns.

Pokusevski currently sits No. 12 on The Ringer’s NBA Draft big board but has fallen to No. 21 on Sports Illustrated’s board. His wide range of outcomes as a prospect creates a difficult dilemma for NBA front offices.

Pokusevski could easily become the signature pick of the 2020 draft that fans laugh at their team for drafting or laugh at other teams for passing on. The Minnesota Timberwolves cannot afford to miss on a prospect during this crucial time in franchise yesterday.

It would not be surprised to see Minnesota take a swing with the No. 17 or No. 33 pick if Gersson Rosas and the front office believe that Pokusevski could become the next game-changing player, in the vein of Giannis Antetokounmpo.

However, if Minnesota believes that Aleksej Pokusevski’s risk outweigh the reward, then they would be wise to let another team attempt to solve the complex case of the 7-foot wing from Serbia.
