Minnesota Timberwolves: Projecting the new starting five
SHOOTING GUARD – D’ANGELO RUSSELL
D’Angelo Russell is one of the franchise cornerstones for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He is an electric, score-first guard that brings more than enough as a playmaker, as well. Pairing him with Rubio in the backcourt will allow Russell to take on even more of a scoring role, letting Rubio do much of the playmaking.
Russell fits in as a secondary playmaker as well, or someone that can take over as the lead guard as Rubio is resting. We still have yet to see much of what Russell can do in a full strength Wolves team alongside Karl-Anthony Towns, but there is a lot of optimism among management that they will be the framework of an incredibly young, promising team.
The Timberwolves guard room is interesting. After Rubio and Russell, there is Malik Beasley and, well, not much else. Depending on whether Jordan McLaughlin is re-signed, Minnesota may end up considering adding another depth point guard, someone that can play defense and facilitate an offense – possibly Kris Dunn or Rajon Rondo (for the right price).
