The Minnesota Timberwolves seemingly had a successful draft night. Looking forward, there is still work that needs to be done to improve the overall rotation of the roster.

The Minnesota Timberwolves need to continue to build on what most considered to be a really, really good draft night – one which they landed two surefire starters along with two additional first round picks.

There are a few needs that the Timberwolves need to address in free agency. The first is adding another versatile forward. While the team did select Jaden McDaniels with the 28th overall pick, he is at-best a project-player that needs time to develop his body and skillset before playing real, consistent NBA minutes. Jake Layman is also a really good role player, but probably not best utilized in the starting lineup.

After those two, Juan Hernangomez is also a restricted free agent. He is not a starting caliber power forward either. The Timberwolves also traded away James Johnson in the deal that acquired Ricky Rubio.

The Timberwolves have a lot of momentum heading into free agency, and roughly $9 million to spend through a mid-level exception afforded by the league. With only four teams that have legitimate salary cap space, Minnesota has the opportunity to land a player worth more than that exception.
