FIRST PICK – Anthony Edwards

The Minnesota Timberwolves went out and got pure talent in this years’ NBA Draft. Gersson Rosas went out and selected high-upside players, which, if they end up hitting, could all be very, very good.

Anthony Edwards was the first overall pick in a draft that was seemingly barren of any top-tier talent. Still, he’s a score-first guard with elite contact balance at the rim and can make shots at all three levels. Though his efficiency numbers were not elite at Georgia, he also did not play with the greatest talent around him, allowing opponents to key in on him specifically.

Edwards has questions about his game, specifically about whether he will be able to affect winning at a high level – or if he falls into the good-stats-low-impact category that some predict. It’s downright lazy to compare Edwards to the likes of Andrew Wiggins, but he will need to show that he can make significant progress throughout his current game in order to brake that stigma.

Everything about Edwards put aside, I do believe that the Timberwolves passed on the best overall player in the draft. While LaMelo Ball maybe was not the best basketball fit for Minnesota, he had the floor to make an impact right away as a high-level passer and could have been an intriguing fit alongside D’Angelo Russell in the backcourt.
