RICKY RUBIO TRADE

The Timberwolves traded the 17th overall selection (and James Johnson) for Ricky Rubio and two additional draft picks during the NBA Draft last Wednesday.

Rubio, 30, was excellent for the Suns this past year. He averaged 13 points, five rebounds, and nine assists. He also was effective shooting the ball and was a plus defender as well. Rubio also had a net on/off rating of +6.3 when he was on the court for the Suns.

He helped Devin Booker to an all-star season in addition to DeAndre Ayton becoming much better as a player, as well.

All in all, the fit between Rubio and Russell should be an interesting one as the season goes on. Both players should start and will provide a lot of playmaking in the backcourt. Hopefully, Rubio’s 3-point shot holds up so that the Timberwolves’ spacing is not affected. Although, having Russell play more offball should further unlock his ability as a scorer.

The Timberwolves landing an effective, two-way guard as well as two draft picks for the 17th overall selection is more than a steal – it’s a heist. Minnesota has filled out their guard rotation beautifully.
