The Minnesota Timberwolves dropped a game that was within their grasps until the final minutes. Losing to the San Antonio Spurs, the Timberwolves now are tied for the worst record in the NBA (along with the Detroit Pistons).

111. 29. Final. 108. 86

The Minnesota Timberwolves lost a heart-breaker after having a nearly-98-percent chance to win in the fourth quarter, according to ESPN’s win probability tracker. Again, this loss reflects incredibly poorly on everyone – coaching, players, and the overall effort that was given tonight – nothing was falling in the fourth quarter.

Despite the tough loss, one of the highlights was Malik Beasley, who led the team in points by a significant margin. He scored 29 on 18 shots, also recording six rebounds and one assist. Beasley may not be an All-Star this season, but he has absolutely been Minnesota’s best player through the first 21 games of the season – and it isn’t even remotely close.

Another player that had a good performance was D’Angelo Russell, who scored 20 points and assisted five buckets. He committed zero turnovers, although his play over the course of the fourth quarter was suspect.

Rookie Anthony Edwards scored 14 points on 14 shots. Edwards also had six rebounds, two assists, one block, and zero turnovers. He has been good over the past several games, and Edwards had two sequential plays which he looked excellent at finishing at the rim tonight.

The Timberwolves failed to contain DeMar DeRozan, who scored 30 points without attempting a single three-pointer. He also had eight rebounds and six assists, delivering in crunch time to eliminate the Minnesota lead during the fourth quarter.

One of the main failures in the game, though, was the Timberwolves’ ability to draw any fouls. Granted, there were some no-calls that account for this, but only taking 11 total FTs is more on the team than the referees.

Regardless, the Timberwolves miss Karl-Anthony Towns. Like, a lot. Hopefully he will be back soon, although he should not be pressured into playing sooner – COVID-19 is a complicated virus and everyone should respect the decisions of both Towns and the Timberwolves medical staff.

The Timberwolves’ next game is against the OKC Thunder on February 5th. We’ll see you then.
