Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 offseason trades to improve the team
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been the worst team in the NBA for essentially the entire season. Unfortunately for them, it is unlikely that they retain their draft pick (only a 40-some-percent chance).
Looking forward to ways they could possibly improve on their team this offseason, free agency is not much of an option outside of the exceptions awarded to most teams. The total payroll is actually going to be higher in 2021-22 than it was this season (even with losing Ed Davis and Jarred Vanderbilt) because of the annual increases to the contracts of Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, and (sigh) Ricky Rubio.
The only money that isn’t guaranteed next season is through the contracts of Naz Reid and Jaylen Nowell (suffice to say, those players are not being waved).
This season, riddled by injury, has been incredibly unlucky for Minnesota – and even by not making any moves – the team will be naturally better. It’s important to stress that Russell and Towns have played less than ten games together.
The Timberwolves’ main asset in any trade is going to be Malik Beasley, who had a good season when he was in the lineup. That said, he’s only played limited games thus far due to a recent injury in addition to a previous 12-game long suspension.
