Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 offseason trades to improve the team
The precursor to this deal is that Damontas Sabonis would have to request a trade from the Indiana Pacers. There has seemingly been some frustration on both sides, but the prospect of him actually requesting a trade from Indiana seems unlikely.
That said, it also wouldn’t be known what the Pacers would look to accomplish in dealing him. Here, they get a knockdown shooter, two decent young players, and multiple draft picks.
Would this be the best deal Indiana gets? Maybe, probably not. But it would make a lot of sense for Minnesota.
The Timberwolves would be giving up a lot of assets, yes, but getting a two-time All-Star on the right side of thirty would absolutely be worth it. If D’Angelo Russell were able to return to his former Brooklyn Nets-self alongside Sabonis and Towns, that’s likely a good seed in the Western Conference.
Sabonis also has three years left on his contract after this year, and for an All-Star caliber player, that’s one of the better contracts in the NBA.
