Minnesota Timberwolves: The General Manager Game: Free Agency

If the offseason were to unfold as I’ve displayed so far, the Timberwolves would have about $8.8 million to spend before they reached the projected luxury tax line for 2021-22. In order to stay below that line, the goal of the signings here are to add a veteran (or two) for a cheap price.

Patty Mills: 2-years, $10 million (second year team option)

Patty Mills has been with the San Antonio Spurs for almost his entire career. That said, he has been a consistent rotational guard for the past five years, playing in 373 games, averaing 10 points, two rebounds, and three assists on 43/39/87 splits. With Mills’s ability to play on or off ball, he makes a great fit to play alongside each of Rubio, Russell, and Edwards.

Jeff Green: 1-year, $3.5 million

Gerald Green would be the perfect rotational forward to add to the Timberwolves roster, being able to play either forward spot or even as an ultra-small-ball five. Green is a great 3-point shooter and adds versatility defensively.

Two-Way contracts: Moses Wright (center, GA Tech), Jared Harper (guard, Auburn//Knicks)

The Timberwolves should take a look at bringing in talent via two-way contracts this offseason, especially with the team being so close to the luxury tax line. Moses Wright is projected to be either a late-2nd-round pick or undrafted free agent – and he’s a big man that brings a lot of upside shooting the ball. Jared Harper, who currently is on a one-year contract with the New York Knicks, is unlikely to be brought back given the expectations that will be assigned to NYK this offseason. Both players make a lot of sense for the Timberwolves.
