Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 players that lost value in 2020-21 – Juan Hernangomez

The Timberwolves traded for Juan Hernangomez as part of the original Robert Covington trade – the one that also netted a 2020 first round pick and Malik Beasley. He then signed a three-year contract extension (with a team option as the last year) worth about $20 million.

Hernangomez, a stretch big, has had some good moments in a Minnesota uniform. Just in late April, for instance, he scored 22 points on 12 shots in a seven-point win against the Houston Rockets.

His lows, though, are really low. Hernangomez is the worst defenders on a team that has a lot of bad defenders. He struggles to guard anybody along the perimeter, and does not have the physicality to challenge any bigs at the rim.

Additionally, his overall offensive game can really struggle if he fails to find any consistency from the 3-point line. And for someone whose main attribute is his 3-point shooting, it just was not good enough this past year to warrant quality minutes.

Hernangomez shot only 33-percent from the 3-point line, and that is where the majority of his shots come.

It is unfortunate that he has underperformed this season because of the flashes that he showed in the dozen-some games at the end of the 2019-20 season, averaging 13 points per game on 42-percent from three.

Maybe Hernangomez will get better, but his overall performance this past season really, really hurt his value.
