3 teams Minnesota Timberwolves fans should cheer for in the playoffs: New York Knicks
The New York Knicks shocked the basketball world by claiming the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, winning 41 games this season. The Knicks, who were expected to be among the worst teams in basketball, were excellent on the defensive end, and were led by the soon-to-be Most Improved Player, Julius Randle.
Randle, averaging 24 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists this season, has been legitimately great, and might have even been good enough to get recognition on one of the three All-NBA teams.
Additionally, the Knicks hired former Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau this past offseason after parting with Dave Fizdale early in the 2019-20 season. Thibodeau brought the Knicks to the playoffs for the first time since 2012-13, when Carmelo Anthony was at his peak in a New York uniform.
In addition to Thibs, the Knicks also have two former Timberwolves on the roster in Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson, both of whom were on the roster when Thibodeau was coach.
Rose, of course, had his best moment in a Minnesota jersey when he scored 50 points against Utah in a late October game in 2018. He averaged 18 points per game off of the bench on efficient numbers during the 18-19 season.
Taj Gibson gave the Timberwolves over 150 games of solid basketball, averaging 12 points, seven rebounds, 0.8 steals, and 0.6 blocks over his 139 starts – just a purely average started – but instrumental in the lone season that the Timberwolves returned to the playoffs.
The Timberwolves don’t have much going for them currently – but the NBA playoffs have always been really entertaining. The Trail Blazers, Warriors, and Knicks are teams that Wolves fans should watch if they want to ‘have a temporary team’.
