Minnesota Timberwolves season grades: Jarred Vanderbilt
The Minnesota Timberwolves saw the emergence of several different young players, including Jarred Vanderbilt, who proved to be a solid defensive option in the frontcourt.
Vanderbilt was acquired by the Timberwolves in the Robert Covington trade that also brought in Malik Beasley, Juan Hernangomez, and a first-round draft pick. He was seen as a thorw-in at the time, but was able to function well in a capacity as a defender next to Karl-Anthony Towns.
Minnesota Timberwolves season grades: Jarred Vanderbilt
Jarred Vanderbilt averaged five points, six rebounds, as well as one steal and one block per game in 64 appearances this season (18 minutes per game). Vanderbilt, mostly known for his defense and rebounding, had a really efficient season in terms of scoring at the rim, shooting 72-percent there.
The Timberwolves really were able to utilize Vanderbilt is a good role – as a glue player that steps in and brings energy – something the Timberwolves haven’t had since Taj Gibson was a two-year starter.
Vanderbilt originally was not appearing in games – at least for the first two of the season. For his first month’s worth of appearances, though, he proved to be a consistent, good frontcourt player that can slot in at either the power forward or center position.
Vanderbilt is going to have an interesting offseason ahead of him. The Timberwolves, restrained by their current payroll, may have to go over the luxury tax in order to re-sign him – as his estimated worth could be relatively similar to the contract Juan Hernangomez received last summer.
Vanderbilt will be a 22-year-old restricted free agent, and the Timberwolves can at least use the qualifying offer – so if he decides to sign with another team – Minnesota will be able to match any offer.
Jarred Vanderbilt season grade: B
Moving forward, Vanderbilt needs to at least work on extending his game to the mid-range. He took 43 shots within 10 feet (but not at the rim) and only hit 10 of those shots. He only made one attempt from beyond 10 feet, being a corner-3 at the end of the shot clock.
