Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 Russell trades if the Wolves get Cunningham
Timberwolves fans reading this article might well be feeling uneasy at this point. Russell has been the biggest name involved in each of these trades. Even with Cunningham manning the point, is roster balance worth moving D-Lo for pennies on the dollar?
Yes, but if you feel differently, this is the trade proposal for you.
Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 D’Angelo Russell trades if the Timberwolves get Cade Cunningham
It may be a tougher sell for the Pistons’ front office. They’re beyond satisfied with Grant’s performance this season, and for good reason. Still, there are selling points to this deal from their point of view as well.
Russell is two years younger than Grant. They absolutely need a point guard, as rookie floor general Killian Hayes wrapped up the 2020-21 NBA season with a PER of 5.3. Let’s be generous and call that…horrible.
They also get off of Joseph’s hefty $12.4 million dollar a year contract. That’s a price the Wolves would be happy to pay to acquire Grant, who would be a dream acquisition for the franchise.
In a situation where the Pistons land Jalen Suggs, this hypothetical is likely to remain just that: a hypothetical. For now, lets all salivate over the concept of a Towns/Grant/Edwards/Beasley/Cunningham starting lineup. That sounds a lot like a 2021-22 playoff berth, and future championship contention.
Here’s hoping Karl Anthony-Towns isn’t a frequent Dunking with Wolves reader (actually scratch that: it would be just too cool if he was). The idea of trading his close friend after they’ve played a whopping total of six NBA games together may not appeal to him.
Still, if Cade Cunningham ends up being as good as advertised in a Minnesota Timberwolves uniform, he may not miss him for very long.
