Minnesota Timberwolves: One trade scenario with the first overall pick.

Okay, let’s make one thing clear. If nothing else, this should be something you get from this article.

The Minnesota Timberwolves SHOULD NOT trade the first overall pick if it is awarded to them. Yes, Cade Cunningham brings skills already on the team – but he is one of the best prospects in the NBA Draft since Anthony Davis – he is THAT good.

You find a way to incorporate that level of player to your team, rather than moving him.

However, if the Timberwolves do make the mistake of trading the first overall pick, the team that makes the most sense would be the Oklahoma City Thunder.

First, the Thunder are likely going to do everything in their power to get the first overall pick – they have the assets to make that happen – with more than ten first round picks owned over the course of the next three seasons. It simply is not plausible for them to use all of those picks given an NBA roster is only 15 spots deep.

Cunningham would be the ideal fit alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – who proved he was a legitimate 2/3rdoption last season.

The Timberwolves, additionally, would be landing two extra picks – an early second this year- and a mid-to-late-first next season. Both of those are valuable.

However, Lu Dort would provide a great defensive presence along the wings while also giving at least average shooting. Dort turned from a specialist into one of the better Thunder players last year. His presence would also make Josh Okogie more disposable.

Additionally, the Timberwolves could still bring in Jalen Suggs with the fourth pick – someone that has an overall complementary skill set that fits with each of Russell, Edwards, and Towns perfectly.
