I want to start this explanation by saying that the only way this trade is considered by Minnesota is if they jump up in the NBA Draft Lottery – particularly high enough to select Cade Cunningham.

If the 10-percent chance at Cunningham hits, they could surround him with very-high-level role players, stacking up their bench with Robinson and Toppin while getting one of the best two-way complementary forwards in the league in Anunoby.

The Knicks, in this scenario, get the opportunity to get Julius Randle a true 2nd/3rd option (depending on your opinion of RJ Barrett). Again, they’d have even more salary cap space later to help surround that core group of players.

The Timberwolves would have a potential starting lineup of Cade Cunningham-Anthony Edwards-OG Anunony-Jaden McDaniels-Karl-Anthony Towns, with a bench unit of Ricky Rubio-Malik Beasley-Leandro Bolmaro-Obi Toppin-Mitchell Robinson.

That’s a playoff team in the Western Conference, despite how youthful the roster may be. It would have the perfect combination of young players on good contracts and stars between Edwards, Towns, and Cunningham.

Again though, that’s a huge return on Russell – someone that has not really proven he may be worth it since his Brooklyn days – so it may be too idealistic to ask the Knicks to give that much up. Additionally, this scenario only happens if the Timberwolves are able to win the lottery – and that does not seem as though it is going to happen in itself.
