Scottie Barnes. 11. player. 170. . Guard/Forward. Charlotte Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets had an impressive season, led by 2020-21 Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball. Things are finally looking up for the team, but the Hornets really need to continue to add pieces around Ball, and hopefully one of them turns into his potentials second option – because right now Gordon Hayward is on the wrong side of 30.

NBA Mock Draft: Charlotte Hornets select Scottie Barnes

Scottie Barnes is an excellent defensive prospect that brings high-level playmaking. As Florida State’s sixth man this past year, he averaged 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists. In Charlotte, he could come off of the bench, spell LaMelo Ball as the backup point guard, while also guarding opposing 2-4 on defense, allowing Terry Rozier, Gordon Hayward, or Malik Monk to have a weaker defensive assignment.

If there is one thing the Hornets have to address this offseason, it is perimeter defense (particularly along the wings), and Barnes does exactly that.

The shooting numbers for Barnes are concerning, but again, if he is able to improve to even league-average efficiency, he is going to be a top-50 player given how translatable his other skills are – and that is not something that should be taken for granted.

There will be temptation to address the center position with this pick, but Charlotte should not be devoting three roster spots to first-and-second year bigs (with Carey and Richards already under contract).
