Second-round draft prospects for the Minnesota Timberwolves: Amar Sylla

Amar Sylla | PF | Oostende (Senegal) | 6-foot-9, 195 pounds

Amar Sylla is an insane athlete that would immediately contribute to the Wolves.

At 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, Sylla already has the physical gifts and athleticism to help the Wolves defensively. He has strong footwork with the ability to stay in front of smaller players, and has shown sharp defensive instincts in help situations.

Sylla’s film shows the archetype of a Jaden McDaniels or a Pascal Siakam – length, good mobility, the ability to guard multiple positions, and the potential to be a versatile scorer on offense.

Offensively, Sylla is still a bit raw, but again, his physical tools give him huge upside. He is already a respectable handler and a strong finisher, particularly in transition. He also has good form on his lefty jump shot, which gives him the potential to be a three-level scorer.

From the Timberwolves’ perspective, Sylla would immediately bring energy and defensive help to the second unit, which would be especially helpful if McDaniels were to be in the starting lineup next season or be included in a blockbuster trade. Sylla’s floor is a strong defender that is deadly in transition, and his ceiling is a dynamic two-way big that can score from anywhere.

Sylla had some NBA interest in 2020 before opting for another year of international basketball. Currently, he is projected to be selected as high as No. 46 but some mock boards don’t even have him being drafted. If the Wolves have the option to either trade into the late second round or to pick up Sylla as an undrafted free agent, they should definitely consider bringing him to Minnesota.
