Timberwolves Rumors: Possible Danilo Gallinari trade package?
Rumors: The Minnesota Timberwolves were recently rumored to be interested in the Atlanta Hawks’ Danilo Gallinari, a stretch-4 that has been consistent throughout his career and played for several winning teams.
Gallinari is a player that fits what the Timberwolves severely need – a win-now veteran at a position which Minnesota is currently pretty thin. However, going about acquiring Gallinari could be a tall task.
Minnesota Timberwolves Rumors: What could a Danilo Gallinari trade look like?
Trying to trade for Gallinari should be an interesting task as matching salaries could be a bit difficult for the Timberwolves. That said, maybe Atlanta is interested in acquiring one of the main players on the Timberwolves – like Malik Beasley.
"Minnesota Timberwolves Rumors:“The Minnesota Timberwolves have been pursuing Danilo Gallinari from the Atlanta Hawks in the offseason trade market, sources say.Gallinari has two years and $42 million remaining on his contract. The second year (22-23) is partially guaranteed for $5 million.” – Dane Moore (@DaneMooreNBA on Twitter)"
Beasley would make sense for the Hawks, he would add even more shooting to a Trae Young-led team that can always use off-ball perimeter motion. Gallinari, while he helps space the floor, is an expensive contract for a team that is looking to continue to build on a conference finals appearance this past season.
Here is my guess at what a Timberwolves-Hawks trade would look like:
Okay, I get it, this is a larger trade than what most of you probably expected – but it does make sense for both teams. The Timberwolves add a veteran that they really need while also acquiring two assets – the pick and Okongwu.
Also, I will add that Okongwu looked really good in some areas this past year – particularly in playoff minutes (albeit with some inconsistency). Adding defense in the frontcourt as well as more consistency in spacing is a win, and while losing Josh Okogie and Malik Beasley wouldn’t be totally favorable, the Timberwolves do already have some replacement players on the roster – Leandro Bolmaro coming over from Europe and Jaylen Nowell.
And while Bolmaro/Nowell have yet to prove they can be what Beasley was last year – Beasley is also seen as a risk – and with one more off-the-court error – he could be out of the league perminantly. Getting actual assets in a trade where Minnesota moves him would be nice.
Following this trade, the Timberwolves would have a nine-man rotation of: Russell-Edwards-McDaniels-Gallinari-Towns-Rubio-Nowell-Vanderbilt (RFA)-Okongwu, and that isn’t exactly something to be laughing at. The Timberwolves being able to diversify their positional breakdown with this trade is great – and they continue to add to a promising young core of players.
