About two days after NBA free agency opened, the Minnesota Timberwolves still have some options available to them on the open market – players that presumably would like the role available to them in Minnesota.

As soon as free agency opened on Monday night, there was a flood of signings (as there are every year). Several teams got better, several got significantly better, while others just looked to maintain their rosters. The Timberwolves have yet to make a major signing (outside of a few two-way contracts) – but their name has still been floated as a possible destination in some rumors.

The Timberwolves don’t have any open salary cap space to use. After trading Ricky Rubio to the Cavaliers, they opened more room under the luxury tax, but the Timberwolves still have very little flexibility in what they can go about doing. At their disposal, the Timberwolves have a $9.5 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception.

Again, though, with free agency winding down and most key-level role players out of contention, it could be hard for the Timberwolves to find a player worth giving that money to. There are a few players that make plenty of sense for the team – especially if they wish to make a run at the playoffs this coming season. Minnesota is missing a few valuable archetypes – most notably a high character veteran player and two-way combo-forward.

Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Gersson Rosas has seemingly been active in the trade market – so a possible sign-and-trade is also not an unrealistic possibility.
