Minnesota point guard Patrick Beverley has been the center of controversy recently.  Controversy? Perhaps hurricane is a better term.  He has been making headlines by lambasting Phoenix Suns veteran point guard Chris Paul. Right or wrong, there is a time to trash-talk, and a time not to do so. His latest fiasco has been a bit cringe-worthy.

If you are going to make big checks with your trash-talking on and off the court, you had better be prepared to cash that check with your play. Patrick Beasley writes ’em all the time. But he can’t cash ’em. Need an example? With the Minnesota Timberwolves taking a three-point lead in game five, and the series tied at two wins apiece, Pat Bev made the ‘You’re too small’ sign to Ja Morant.  That score happened at 4:25 in the final quarter.

101-98, Timberwolves ahead, just over four minutes to go. And you trash the guy who is capable of beating you?  Well, guess what happened?  Ja Morant scored the final 13 points for the Memphis Grizzlies. The Timberwolves were held to just eight points over that same period.

And that’s just not going to get it done, Pat Bev. After all, the Timberwolves were up by a ton of points when the fourth quarter opened in that pivotal game five. The score before Beverly made that two-point shot found the 11-point lead shaved to just one point.

I know that some players use trash-talking on the court to get inside the heads of their opponents. But there is a point where you let your performance do your talking. Much like the Minnesota Timberwolves’ entire roster, Patrick Beverly is just not that guy to be loud on the court. For the Timberwolves to get to that next level, they should be prepared to trade away Beverly here and now.
