Karl-Anthony Towns honored with 2nd All-NBA third-team selection

SuperMax: Steal or highway robbery?
And that’s the controversy. The Minnesota Timberwolves want to give Karl-Anthony Towns a SuperMax deal. Karl-Anthony Towns wants to sign a SuperMax deal. But will it mean an NBA Championship down the road for the Timberwolves? Can the Big KAT be that tough-as-nails guy who gets better in the NBA Playoffs?
Here is a statement from Karl Anthony Towns on inking a new deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves when asked via his press conference about the possibility of a SuperMax deal.
And if you missed that, here is the transcribed version:
"“I love this city. So obviously things will happen this summer when they happen, they happen. I’ve been here so long I don’t like making prophecies. I’ll let it come if it comes. If it comes, it comes, then we’ll deal with it when it comes. Just take it every day. I’ve been here long enough to know that everyday things can change, so just be happy with where everything is at right now.” – Karl-Anthony Towns as quoted by Basketball RealGM.com’s Dane More"
Of course, this question was posed to him before he had earned his second All-NBA team honor, so everything was still hypothetical. Now that he is eligible, you should start to look for the SuperMax deal to be part of the rhetoric from both the team and the player.
Right now, the focus of everyone is on KAT and a SuperMax deal. But that is not the goal here. The ultimate goal is winning NBA Championships. If a SuperMax deal with KAT gets that done, then it’s a steal. But if it doesn’t? How long before paying an NBA player the maximum possible is highway robbery, stealing opportunities from the team to sign another worthwhile talent that could help get the Timberwolves over the hump?
In the end, the goal is not to get paid. It’s to get Championships.
