As we continue to run down the list of potential players who might intrigue the Minnesota Timberwolves front office, we are not looking at the big names and big contract types. Rather, we continue to rummage through NBA Free Agency looking for high-quality players who may be available at an affordable rate but who can still contribute.

The challenge in doing so is a simple fact that many other NBA teams are doing the same thing. Of course, not all teams are looking at earning a berth in the NBA Playoffs. Even fewer are seeking front-court help. But make no mistake, competition for bigs in NBA Free Agency will be fierce.

On a positive note, the Minnesota Timberwolves can focus on players who need only fill a backup role, not as a starter. The curious part of the next player we will focus on has primarily been a starter. But there are reasons to believe he could play a solid role for the TWolves.

NBA Free Agency – VII Andre Drummond

It’s hard to believe that 6-foot-10, 279-pound center Andre Drummond is only 29 years of age, but it’s true. He’s a 10-year NBA veteran, has played for five different teams, and continues to play solid ball. When many think of Drummond, they think back to the powerhouse Detroit Pistons center who was a solid scoring threat. Missed in many of those strolls down memory lane is the fact that he can play solid defense as well.

Throughout his career, Drummond has been an NBA starter, except for the 49 games he played with the Philadelphia 76ers. There, his minutes per game and points per game dropped, but he was a solid contributor off the bench. Unfortunately, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets before the playoffs.

Drummond is another bargain, costing just $2.4 million on a one-year deal. And more than just light on the wallet, the guy is still capable of spot starts. While he does not offer much in terms of a stretch-4, he is absolutely a guy who can come off the bench and give solid play.
