Minnesota Timberwolves: 5-step plan for a perfect off-season
By Bret Stuter
Step I: Sign a solid backup center
The Minnesota Timberwolves need to get help for center Karl-Anthony Towns. It’s clear that the team struggled without KAT on the court. Knowing that fact. opposing teams know that forcing Towns into making questionable decisions in transition to defense can fill his fouls allotment pretty quickly. That gives even inferior teams a fighting chance at success.
To help the matter, we’ve compiled a series of 10 articles featuring potential big men who could be on the Minnesota Timberwolves’ radar. Many are free agents, but there may be a need for the team to consider trade packages as well.
The team could benefit greatly from a versatile C/PF type who has the ability to rotate in at either position. If that type of player is not readily available, then the team could look at a more traditional center, and allow KAT to slide over to the power forward position on the team.
More than one way to help out the KAT
While big men may not be overflowing in the 2022 NBA Draft, a shrewd ensemble of NBA executives currently guiding the Minnesota Timberwolves in Tim Connelly, Sachin Gupta, and Matt Lloyd are well equipped to find bargains and procure them in whatever means are necessary. And, as noted earlier, the Timberwolves may consider trades as the avenue to acquire the best player for the roster.
Five key steps. So far, the Minnesota Timberwolves appear to be on track as they have already added two of the sharpest NBA minds to their operations. But the reputations earned by those NBA executives do not mean much in terms of how that will help the team going forward. This is a team that needs the dominoes to fall the right way and has made significant investments to help their odds. Will it all come together?
As Timberwolves President Tim Connelly has said, the team is prepared to make ‘informed mistakes.’ Even though this team could slip, their focus will not be dependent upon one high-risk maneuver. Hang on, this could be a fun off-season.
