The Minnesota Timberwolves, like all 30 NBA teams, have pivoted quickly from their 2022 NBA Draft to assembling a formidable summer league roster that this both competitive and the equivalent of a dress rehearsal for young NBA hopefuls as a last-ditch effort to be noticed by NBA team front offices.
Summer league rosters may be undervalued by some NBA fans, but you can bet that each player added to the roster of an NBA team’s summer league squad sees the opportunity for what it is: One more chance to land an NBA contract.
Kevon Harris is an intriguing player (yes, I say that quite a bit), particularly as an addition to the Minnesota Timberwolves summer league team. A 6-foot-6 point guard will always make me sit up and take notice:
Still, height is not everything.
Thankfully, there may be more to Harris than a tall point guard. But you have to work a bit to find it.
He was available in the 2020 NBA Draft but failed to hear his name called. He was subsequently drafted by the G-League Raptors 205, where he has played for two seasons with a stint in the Euroleague.
Harris is a work-a-holic type of player, a player who will spend lots of time in the gym working on his craft. Because of his height and ball skills, he can defend anyone on the basketball well enough to give his team a chance. He has a nice reach-in, enabling him to create turnovers – particularly when guarding taller opponents.
He is surprisingly adept at rebounding for a backcourt guy and can generate a smooth transition from defense to offense. He is a quite capable shooter, with a solid shot from the floor and an ever-improving three-point shot. But don’t let that fool you, he can distribute the ball to the open shooter, too.
He is the first backcourt player to make this list, but he will not be alone. Four down. Let’s keep going.
