From the moment that the Minnesota Timberwolves emerged from the 2022 NBA Draft, the team immediately had to pivot from restocking the roster to assembling a roster for the upcoming NBA Summer League. While it is a time to audition prospects who are intriguing but who did not hear their names called during the NBA Draft, it can be a time to discover roster fits or possible future players.

NBA teams can sign up to 15 players to compete in the NBA summer league. The Minnesota Timberwolves, like many NBA teams, have wasted no time jumping out of the gates to add players.

The first such player we’ll discuss is Duke senior forward, Theo John.

John may be a longshot to make an NBA roster this year, but he is worth discussing:

The Timberwolves know that their greatest needs are in the frontcourt, and John can offer a taste of some of the Timberwolves’ needs, but perhaps not in the amounts or level that the team is seeking.

John may not be an offensive asset to the summer league team. He has a light volume three-point shot and does not use his size and power to dominate offensively in the paint. While he is a big 6-foot-9 245-pound powerful athlete, he does not turn the ball over much.

What makes him worth a peek is the fact that he is a big strong presence near the basket, able to block shots and bring down those rebounds. He is rather adept at setting screens for shooters, and he is not lacking in power or physicality.
