III – Nobody will argue over price if Minnesota Timberwolves win an NBA Championship

What is the value of a tract of desert land? Now, what is the value of that tract of desert land if you discover that oil rests beneath it? The value of anything is a perception, an arbitrary agreement between a seller and a buyer to exchange items of equal value. And you do it every day too.

When you fill your gas tank, buy groceries, pick up a cold six-pack, and pay for dinner and a movie, you are unknowingly agreeing to pay the sticker price of that product, item, service, or opportunity. If you are unsatisfied, you will complain about the price of gas on social media, or swear to never go back to that restaurant. But you pay. And that is what determines the fair market value.

So what changes when we pivot to an NBA player? Well, there is no price tag. Many NBA Insiders, analysts, sportscasters, and pundits don’t have a dog in the show. So it’s all subjective, opinion-centric rhetoric. Right now, you get far more attention by complaining than by consent.

But let’s fast forward for a moment. If the Minnesota Timberwolves win an NBA Championship, compete in the NBA Championship, or even advance a round in the NBA Playoffs, will Rudy Gobert’s price tag remain controversial?

I don’t believe that it will.

We have a very myopic view of the world around us. What is important to us is the latest headline, what happened to us yesterday, or what we fear may happen to us tomorrow. Winning cures everything in practically any competitive professional sport.

If the Minnesota Timberwolves hoist the NBA Championship Trophy aloft due to the contribution of Rudy Gobert, it will all have been worth it. To get something of value, you have to be willing to give up something of value.
