Competing for his home country of France in the 2022 Eurobasket tournament, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert had an excellent outing on Wednesday against Slovenia.

Leading his team with 19 points, the Stifle Tower also put up a team-leading eight rebounds and one block. Ultimately, Slovenia took home the victory over France, 88-82.

But the most exciting moment of the game for Timberwolves fans came with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Playing the pick-and-roll, Gobert set a screen at the top of the key then rolled to the basket.

Catching a pass from Thomas Heurtel, Gobert rose up and threw down a monster one-handed dunk over the undersized Luka Doncic, who was helping away from the corner on defense. With the added contact, it could’ve easily been an and-one.

It was a typical highlight-reel play from one of the best pick-and-roll bigs in the NBA and the world. But to finish the dunk over a superstar the caliber of Doncic makes the play that much sweeter.

Since he was dealt to the Timberwolves from the Utah Jazz, the hype has been growing around Gobert in Minnesota, and plays like this are the exact reason why. His play as a dominant defensive anchor is what sets him apart from his peers, but don’t sleep on his offensive game either.

Rudy isn’t just a run and jump athlete, and he’s more polished as an offensive player than he’s usually recognized as. He may not be Hakeem Olajuwon, but his footwork has become underrated. Staying patient under the rim to make things happen isn’t a quality every big man in the NBA has.

Gobert’s ability as a two-way star will be key to the Minnesota Timberwolves’ success this coming season. No, he won’t average 30 points per game, but his ability to consistently find the right shot and create high-percentage looks should pay off in a big way for the Wolves’ championship aspirations.
