Minnesota Timberwolves could dominate the regular season in 2022-23
By Will Eudy
With the Minnesota Timberwolves’ media day now complete, fans and outsiders were able to gain greater insight into one of the most interesting teams in the NBA this coming season.
While many around the league are expecting the Wolves to be a playoff contender yet again, fans of the franchise have their sights set even higher. After all, the moves made by the front office this summer upgraded an already talented playoff roster.
It’s shaping up to be arguably the most anticipated season in franchise history for Minnesota. With a star-studded roster and numerous All-Star level players, the team’s ceiling may be as high as it’s ever been in the Twin Cities.
While opinions of the roster differ and there’s no shortage of skeptics, signs certainly point to an even more successful regular season for the Timberwolves. In fact, there’s a decent chance they could end up as one of the top teams in the entire league record-wise.
Minnesota Is Loaded With Regular Season Studs
With the solid core of players Minnesota had last season, they finished with a respectable 46 wins and secured the seventh spot in the Western Conference. But after the moves they made this offseason, it’s easy to see the Timberwolves are even better than they were last year top to bottom.
Yes, they lost valuable energy players like Jarred Vanderbilt and Patrick Beverley, but they added one of the biggest floor-raisers in the NBA in Rudy Gobert. A top-three center in the league and arguably the NBA’s best defender, Gobert’s production in the postseason can be debated, but his regular season resume speaks for itself.
A three-time Defensive Player of the Year, the Stifle Tower’s tenacious defensive prowess will be felt every time he steps on the floor for the Timberwolves. After Ja Morant scored in the paint at will against Minnesota in the playoffs, Gobert will ensure Minnesota’s opponents struggle scoring at the cup all regular season.
The Timberwolves’ starting point guard D’Angelo Russell is coming off one of the best regular seasons of his career where he averaged a staggering 7.1 assists per contest. The floor general will be put in position to be even better with the likes of Rudy Gobert roaming the paint. The two will form an elite pick-and-roll combination.
Not to mention Anthony Edwards is set to break out into All-Star form. If he and Karl-Anthony Towns are performing at a borderline All-NBA level, the Timberwolves’ starting lineup may be one of the most intimidating in the league.
With elite role players like Kyle Anderson and Jaylen Nowell filling out the bench, the Timberwolves have one of the deepest and most formidable rotations in the NBA.
Deep Roster Could Lead To Huge Regular Season Success
One team in recent memory that dominated the regular season was the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizz finished with the second-best record in basketball last year, largely due to their deep roster. When Morant was injured, they kept rolling like a well-oiled machine.
With that in mind, there’s certainly reason to believe the Minnesota Timberwolves can replicate this formula in 2022-23. They boast some of the most consistent players in basketball, and barring any major injuries, they could very well end up with one of the best records in the Western Conference.
The Clippers and Warriors may be the only teams with deeper or more experienced rosters in the West top to bottom. It’s not far fetched to think we could see the Timberwolves finish right behind these juggernauts.
