The Minnesota Timberwolves may be getting lots of press over their big trades, but the magic of this team in my mind is how meticulously and deliberately the front office is assembling the bottom of their 2022-23 NBA season roster.
The craftsmanship of the team’s front office is akin to the tile layers that create beautiful mosaics, while other NBA team front offices assemble the bottom of their rosters like a farmer piles up field stones into a pile by heaving them together.
That being said, you likely are looking for examples to defend the high praise that I’m tossing at the Timberwolves. One such example is the late signing of C Luka Garza to a Two-Way contract. What I like so much about this signing is the fact that Garza is another big who has the gift of a perimeter shot.
If you recall, Luka Garza was the guy who rained fire and brimstone down on the LA Lakers in the final quarter of the Timberwolves’ fourth preseason game. By the end of the contest, Lakers fans were left in shock at the unknown player who outclassed their entire roster.
Savior? No. But don’t tell the Minnesota Timberwolves
Moments after the Timberwolves’ preseason ended, Luka Garza’s career with the Minnesota Timberwolves began. But before anyone starts dancing in the streets, Garza was signed to a Two-Way contract, which is the NBA equivalent of being a substitute teacher.
So the irony of the Minnesota Timberwolves Tweet over Luka Garza should not be lost on fans. This tongue-in-cheek Tweet illustrates the swept-away euphoria that accompanies some of the modest NBA signings. In this hilarious classic imagery, Luka Garza is presented as the savior of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The original Tweet (it’s back up) showed a priest holding the Eucharist up, and the priest was labeled the Minnesota Timberwolves while the Eucharist was labeled Luka Garza. That original Tweet has since been modified to show Garza sinking a three-point shot.
While some were clearly offended by the imagery and demanded that the Timberwolves remove the Tweet, I wouldn’t have been so thin-skinned. The Tweet was merely a matter of the team poking fun at how quickly some get carried away. Garza will start the season on a Two-Way contract, which means that he will split time between the Iowa Wolves and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Is it the beginning of a promising career? Perhaps.
But is he the savior of the Timberwolves this season? Now, that would truly be a modern-day miracle.
