The Minnesota Timberwolves are clearly in the midst of learning how to compete as a team with the new roster, and by all accounts, had almost no preparation for the starting lineup as Karl-Anthony Towns fought a serious illness, and Rudy Gobert fought through knee soreness.
The Timberwolves won two games, but those two victories came at the expense of the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that clearly has its sights set on landing the top pick of the 2023 NBA Draft.
The Timberwolves’ early schedule this season was supposed to be against weaker NBA teams. But the Utah Jazz opened the season with three straight wins, and the San Antonio Spurs entered this game on a two-game winning streak.
If you need a positive spin on the night, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ young shooting guard Anthony Edwards reached a monumental landmark in his career, scoring his 3000th career point. That makes him the eighth youngest player in NBA history to reach 3,000 points.
The San Antonio Spurs are literally dominating the Timberwolves in every category. After three quarters:
- 24-2 transition points
- 60 points in the paint (Timberwolves have 34 points in the paint)
- Three-point shooting (37.9 percent vs. 17.4 percent)
- Rebounds (41 vs 39)
This is the first back-to-back in the Timberwolves’ schedule, and clearly, the Timberwolves are not putting up much of a fight in their second of two back-to-back contests. The energy of the team has really been a problem for the team.
Anthony Edwards, after putting up 30 points, has only scored nine points late in this one. Karl-Anthony Towns leads the Timberwolves in scoring with 24 points, and D’Angelo Russell has hit on a couple of late treys to score 21 points.
Edwards has his 3000th point, but the Timberwolves appear to be a lock to lose their second game of the young season.
