Viral on-court moment should give Timberwolves concern about Edwards
By Will Eudy
In the early part of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ season, there’s been a few concerning developments. The Wolves haven’t looked as cohesive as fans had hoped on either end of the floor, and while the talent is there, Chris Finch and company have yet to figure things out.
Still, there’s reason for optimism that this group can still live up to their potential. With one of the most talented frontcourts in the NBA and All-Star level talent all over the floor, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this team right the ship sooner rather than later.
Even so, they’re going to have to work through some troubles to get there. One player who’s likely under more scrutiny than anyone is Anthony Edwards. The young star has had his ups and downs through the first three weeks of the season, and fans are taking note of his struggles.
Anthony Edwards went viral during Rockets game
During Minnesota’s Saturday night victory over the Houston Rockets, Edwards had a moment on the court that quickly went viral across Twitter. With three and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter and coming out of a timeout, Jordan McLaughlin inbounded the ball to Kyle Anderson.
While McLaughlin made a cut toward the hoop, he ended up being the decoy, as Jaden McDaniels received the pass from Anderson. Swinging the ball from the post to the corner, the Timberwolves got a good look at a three-point shot that ultimately missed.
Meanwhile, Anthony Edwards stood pat on the wing with his hands squarely on his hips. Not even remotely attempting to fool the defense into thinking he was part of the play, Edwards’ inactivity on this play drew the attention of many.
Was Anthony Edwards’ lack of concern troubling?
After a week where Anthony Edwards was scrutinized for commenting on the Wolves’ troubles and even insinuated that the two-big lineups were making it more difficult for him to score, his actions on this play are certainly less than heartwarming.
Was this a display of his lack of zeal for the Timberwolves’ current offensive strategies? Or was it simply a moment where he took a play off and did an exceptionally bad job of disguising the fact that he wasn’t involved in the play?
While it may have been an innocuous moment, it’s still never encouraging to see the team’s franchise player so disengaged in a time where they’re so obviously struggling. Hopefully, this won’t be a moment we have to revisit later for any reason.
