Reason II: Fortune favors the bold

Minnesota Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly was hired to make splashy moves, not be timid. The Minnesota Timberwolves hired President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly to do more than splash sports page headlines in his first season.

This is not a tactical move by the Timberwolves. Rather, this is a fundamental and permanent change in philosophical strategy. The Minnesota Timberwolves are not limiting their goals to getting to the NBA Playoffs, or even to winning series in the NBA Playoffs. The ambition of this organization is to create a winning culture, and as a result, become the preferred destination of top NBA talent.

Better than a brochure

The team cannot accomplish those goals by designing a welcome aboard brochure or designing a lights-out welcome basket to give players and their families whenever they make an official visit to the team and the team’s facilities.

A winning culture starts by winning. But not just the action itself, but how the team is winning. Making a plan and sticking with it until it all falls into place instills far more confidence than a random set of events that gifts some wins to the team.

Ultimately, the Timberwolves have made the plan quite clear and quite public. This team intends to succeed by harnessing two All-Star bigs, something that the NBA has not seen in quite some time. If this team tries to backtrack, that will be rightly viewed as timidity, and that will do even worse damage to this team’s future than if they had never tried their bold strategy in the first place.
