Pass or Pursue Timberwolves trade targets: Gary Trent Jr.

A player that the Toronto Raptors are much more likely to move in a trade is Gary Trent Jr. The one-time Duke Blue Devils wing who arrived in Toronto via Portland doesn’t have the same shared history as the rest of the core and can become a free agent this summer.

At 6’5″ Trent is a bit on the small side for this Raptors roster philosophy, and as he is shooting just 33.5 percent from deep this season he isn’t helping enough to make up for his average positional size. He’s been solid but unspectacular for Toronto this season and is a prime candidate to be moved.

The Wolves are in need of versatile wings to give them options building around their two centers, and Trent is a 38.2 percent career 3-point shooter so his percentages should track up. The Wolves are at their best out in transition, and his steal rate has always been high. He can play some 3 next to the Wolves’ starting backcourt or slide to shooting guard when Anthony Edwards or Russell sit.

Trent is also a lot more gettable, and perhaps their collection of limited resources is enough to make something happen. Trent’s father Gary Trent played the last three seasons of his career in Minnesota and perhaps he would be willing to re-up with the team that sought him out on the trade market.
