The Timberwolves’ strategy is longer term than you may realize

This is not a debate about whether the glass is half full or half empty. It’s simply a fact that if you focus on the rocks on the ground to avoid stumbling, you never see the sights that surround you. Far too many want to rage at this team. If that is your choice, so be it.

But keep that simple fact in mind. If you want to see the Minnesota Timberwolves in ruins, that is the only thing you will see with this team. But also understand that by applying whatever lens you wish to see the team, you are not seeing so much that is truly going on.

Anthony Edwards is maturing. Coach Chris Finch is mentoring and developing A1 in ways and directions that many young NBA guards are never pushed. Just sitting back and watching all of it unfold is almost worth the price of admission alone.

It’s the players, not the picks, that hold value

Draft picks are worth nothing by themselves. Their true value is in the prospects that they ultimately bring to the team. Does no draft picks mean no addition of young talent each season? Not in the least. It simply means that the Minnesota Timberwolves will pay closer attention to the G League and Summer League performances than other teams.

It’s a steep climb to relevancy. Mountain climbers who routinely tackle those treks follow one basic rule: Don’t try to run up the side of this mountain. Doing so tires you out too easily, removes any ability to improvise at the appearance of any new challenges, and greatly reduces your chances of success.

This team has four years to reach the top of the NBA summit. It’s going to be a long climb. Grab your popcorn, kick back, and enjoy the show.
