Ways to Win II: Timberwolves need to cut Karl-Anthony Towns loose on offense

The Minnesota Timberwolves need some offense, and with Anthony Edwards toggling between playing solid defense and putting up points, the team has got to get someone going early and often. Since he has returned, that offensive spark has been provided by PF Karl-Anthony Towns. I believe that he needs to be the offensive engine once more.

Towns can be a bit streaky, as his regular season game log shows. Since returning to the Timberwolves in late March, his eight games in the regular season have held two sub-20+ point performances: He scored just eight points on April 2nd against the Portland Trail Blazers, and he was held to just 14 points on March 26th against the Golden State Warriors.

A KAT always lands on his feet

Still, his average over four games in March 2023 was 21.0 PPG, and his average over four games in April 2023 was 20.5 PPG. In the two games played in the NBA Play-In Tournament, Towns averaged 26.0 points per game. So he does have the ability to snap back pretty quickly.

Is it all simply just a matter of patience and waiting for the shots to drop though? I’m not so sure. It was clear that KAT was struggling to defend Jokic, and that seemed to carry over to the offensive half of the basketball court as well. Perhaps it would be a wise move to mix and match defensive assignments, as that would allow Towns to be more focused on his scoring, which is what the Timberwolves need out of him right now.
