Barring a historic comeback against the Nuggets in round one of the playoffs, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 2022-23 season will be over shortly. When the offseason officially commences, the Timberwolves franchise could potentially be looking at big management changes.

Recently, rumors were floated that Minnesota President Tim Connelly may be looking at a change of scenery. The Washington Wizards unexpectedly parted ways with now-former President and General Manager Tommy Sheppard last week, and that opened up a conversation about moving pieces around the league.

Tim Connelly could be out as Timberwolves President this summer.

Multiple sources reported that Tim Connelly’s name was being connected with the newly-open position. Born and raised just outside of Washington, DC, there are obvious roots in the area for Connelly that could make the position intriguing.

Not to mention, the nation’s capitol is where Tim started his career as an executive. Beginning as an intern with the organization back in 1996, Connelly spent over a decade in Washington. The Wizards reportedly even offered him the currently open position of President back in 2019, though he turned down the opportunity to remain with the Denver Nuggets.

A Connelly departure would mean disaster for Minnesota.

If Tim Connelly were to bite the bullet and spurn Minnesota after just a year with the organization, it would be an outright disaster for the Timberwolves. Some fans of the team will hear this news and be overjoyed that the man who orchestrated the Rudy Gobert trade may be gone, but the sudden change would not be as cut and dry as it appears on the surface.

In trading for Gobert last summer, Connelly put into action the first step in his multi-year plan for the Minnesota Timberwolves. But whether or not that plan ends up working out for the better in the long-term is a moot point if he decides to leave after a single year with the franchise. The Wolves are not getting their first-round picks back from Utah, and Tim departing would leave them stuck on a ship without a captain.

All things considered, it would be a historic franchise-crippling move if Tim Connelly decided to take the Wizards job after all the chess pieces he put into play in one year with Minnesota. Timberwolves fans should be crossing their fingers that he sticks it out in the Twin Cities.
