Timberwolves Luka Garza: “You’ve got to let the peacock fly!”
By Bret Stuter
The Minnesota Timberwolves cannot be so enamored with NBA stars that the team loses sight of those players whose willingness to grind day by day is overlooked. At times, the Timberwolves seemed to be too passive. Losing to losing teams was not just disappointing, it led to the team hovering around .500 when the reality of the Timberwolves roster, even in the face of so many injuries, was a 50+ win team.
The Minnesota Timberwolves simply forgot to focus on NBA basketball basics.
If you want to get back to NBA basketball basics, then you cannot help but bring up the name of soon-to-be Minnesota Timberwolves free agent center Luka Garza. The more you learn about this young man, the more there is to love about him.
For starters, this young man takes nothing for granted. He grinds until he is spent. Then he gets his wind back and goes out and grinds some more:
Check out this video of father Frank Garza’s passionate support of his son, 6-foot-11 Iowa Hawkeye center Luka Garza. There is a lot of pride and pure adrenalin that clearly runs from father to son. That is not something that can be coached up.
The fact is that Luka Garza knows that each and every second that he is on that basketball court, his father is watching. It’s that constant vigilance that has forged Luka Garza into such a work-ethic, meticulous, attention-to-detail type of player. His father taught him that.
The role that Frank Garza has played in the basketball career of his son has come up before. In a March 9, 2021, article by Essentially Sports writer Arjun Athreya, the author portrays the father-son bond of two generations of the Garza family with all of the honor and respect that it is due.
He even lists Frank Garza’s famous quote: “You’ve got to let the peacock fly!”, a quote that has been cited as the Garza family mantra. You can even purchase merchandise with that saying boldly stated on t-shirts, coffee mugs, and more.
Frank Garza played for Idaho Basketball from 1983-1985. Now his son, Luka, is hoping for another contract to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Luka Garza has proven to be worth bringing back. And if he does not deliver in the 2023-24 NBA season, his father Frank Garza will be right there to get him back on track.
And while we’re at it, thank you for taking such a strong interest in your son, Frank. Your devotion to your son shows in every basketball game that he plays.
