The perception of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ future NBA Drafts is that the team has no picks until 2030. That’s just not so. In fact, we have already taken a pretty deep dive into the 2023 NBA Draft and discussed how the Timberwolves can add to their roster depth this season. So, what about the following year, the 2024 NBA Draft?

While it’s a year away, it’s never too late to talk about what is to come. After all, if the Minnesota Timberwolves are going to compete for years to come, then the team will need plenty of new players, not only to refresh and restock the roster but to help balance out the salary cap burden of carrying 15 players, as four of those players take up the lion’s share of the roster’s payroll.

And so, the Timberwolves will be regrouping after their 2023-24 NBA season, and in the process looking to upgrade some of the players at the bottom of their roster. Like who? Well, that’s a season away.  Right now, we know that the Timberwolves roster, pending some unforeseen trade, will have just four players under contract: Center Rudy Gobert, power forward Karl-Anthony Towns, small forward Josh Minott, and shooting guard Wendell Moor Jr.

2024 NBA Draft: When do the Timberwolves pick?

Round 1 – Allotted pick

Round 2 – Traded allotted pick to either Trail Blazers or Thunder

Incoming: 2024 2nd-round pick (lesser of Memphis or Washington picks) from D’Angelo Russell trade

Summary: 1 (0ne) 1st-round pick (MIN), 1 (One) 2nd-round pick (MEM or WAS)

Of course, the Timberwolves are not going to roll into the 2024 NBA offseason with just four players on the roster. The team will have at least one more player on the roster from the 2023 NBA Draft. And the team will likely have extensions in place for SG Anthony Edwards and SF Jaden McDaniels. If the team is correct in their belief that they can extend backup center Naz Reid, then he could be on the roster as well.

Finally, you have to believe that the Timberwolves give serious consideration to a multi-year deal to backup center Luka Garza and backup shooting guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Finally, do veteran forwards Kyle Anderson and/or Taurean Prince warrant one more extension? And what of veteran point guard Mike Conely Jr.?  The Timberwolves do not have a clear successor to his role on the team.

2024 NBA Draft: Timberwolves draft needs

The Minnesota Timberwolves will certainly need to reinforce their roster at this point. After two seasons from the Rudy Gobert/Mike Conley Jr. trades, the team will need to reassess and perhaps realign the Timberwolves roster to address new vulnerabilities and shallow roster depth.

  • Point Guard: The team will need to align this backcourt field general along with shooting guard Anthony Edward’s timeline. If the team had not done so to this point, they will need to add a top-notch point guard. Will a 2024-25 rookie point guard fill that need? Perhaps. If the Timberwolves do not address the need in the 2023 NBA Draft or via the NBA Free Agency market, you have to believe this is their top priority
  • Front court: The Timberwolves may or may not extend their veterans in the front court. As such, the Timberwolves may need to look into reinforcements at these positions as well.
  • Perimeter shooting: Still not a great deal of originality in this one. Every NBA team constantly seeks perimeter shooters, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are no different. With the team committing to their two bigs, the Timberwolves will need to ensure that their roster not only has players who can shoot from beyond the arc but players who can defend that area of the basketball court as well.
  • Bench depth: This is that catch-all category that must be included, simply because the Timberwolves have a great deal of uncertainty beyond this point in time. Will the Timberwolves retreat from their commitment to field two bigs? If so, does this team trade Karl-Anthony Towns (more likely) or Rudy Gobert (less likely)? If a trade does happen, the Timberwolves will need to ensure that the roster is properly configured to complement Anthony Edwards going forward.

There is nothing unique about this shopping list. Just the basic ‘needs help,’ list that all NBA teams will be looking at.

And there you are. While we are still over a year out from the 2024 NBA Draft and haven’t any idea when the Timberwolves’ picks will fall in either Round 1 or Round 2,  there is no doubt that the 2024 NBA Draft will be very important.  This team will be selecting a new pair of rookies to add to the roster during the course of the draft, and we know that the Timberwolves will have plenty of pressure to get it right.

Timberwolves mock draft 2024

So who can the Timberwolves target in the 2024 NBA Draft? Well, that’s quite a ways into the future. Assuming that the Minnesota Timberwolves land on or around the 20th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, we can make some projections based on some existing NBA Big Boards.  The second-round pick that conveys will likely be that of the Memphis Grizzlies, and that should fall on or about pick 50.

So who might the Timberwolves choose in the 2024 NBA Draft? Would you believe Bronny James? That’s right, currently projected to fall at the end of Round 1 in the 2024 NBA Draft, Bronny James Jr. brings everything to the table that the Minnesota Timberwolves are looking for at the point guard position.

Will he be there when the Minnesota Timberwolves pick? If he is not, then there will be a domino effect of highly regarded prospects who fall to the Timberwolves instead. At 18 years of age, Bronny James Jr. is still growing at 6-foot-3. But he can play either PG or SG, and that is likely where his skills and experience land him.

If he’s there, the Timberwolves have a perfect setup for him. If he’s not? Well, a point guard will likely fall to that range of the draft. But what of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ second-round pick?

Mookie Cook is currently a 6-foot-5 small forward high school senior who will likely arrive at the NBA in the 6-foot-8 range.

He has all of the potential of an NBA player, but his development at Oregon will dictate his NBA Draft position.

Although it is more than a year away, the 2024 NBA Draft offers a significant opportunity for the Minnesota Timberwolves to refresh the roster once more. And even at this way-too-early look at the 2024 NBA Draft, the Timberwolves will have a chance to add key contributors for the 2024-25 NBA season.
