Timberwolves head coach

Minnesota Timberwolves Head Coach Chris Finch may be a polarizing figure to some fans, but he has the confidence of the team’s front office and of the players on the roster. He took over the head coaching role for the Minnesota Timberwolves on February 22, 2021, and has never looked back.

While his tenure has been a bit brief, there is already a solid run of NBA Playoff appearances under his belt. The Timberwolves finished the 2021-22 NBA season with a record of 46-36 and the injury-plagued 2022-23 NBA season with a record of 42-40. While some fans may be dissatisfied with the Timberwolves’ record over the past two seasons, this two-season stretch has been the most successful back-to-back season stretch by the team since their 2003-05 stretch resulted in a combined record of 102-62.

Coach Finch has Timberwolves steadily improving

There may have been moments during games that were head-scratchers, but the resolve of the Timberwolves over the past two seasons has been about not making excuses but rather making adjustments. As a result, the Timberwolves have shrugged off their rust and powered through significant injuries to remain in NBA postseason discussions.

The Timberwolves have a solid and competent collection of coaches who complement one another quite nicely. Even though individually, many of the coaches on the staff could be excellent candidates for a head coaching position, the Timberwolves are blessed by a mixed results sort of season and a small NBA market. In summary, the Timberwolves coaches will likely be as overlooked as the players in the coaching carousel this year.

It won’t always be this way. If the Timberwolves manage to step forward as I suspect they are prone to do in the 2023-24 NBA season, they will attract plenty of attention for next year’s coaching search. For now, enjoy the tranquility. The Minnesota Timberwolves are a two-time NBA Playoff team, and I truly believe that the third time is the charm.

How might the Milwaukee Bucks HC search impact the Minnesota Timberwolves? It shouldn’t this year. But it will have the unwelcome effect of advancing Timberwolves assistant coaches to their eventual consideration for an NBA head coaching role.
