4 teams that could steal Naz Reid from the Timberwolves
By Elaine Blum
1. Brooklyn Nets
Before things came crashing down in Brooklyn and their two stars asked to get traded, the Nets already made inquiries about Reid at the trade deadline. Now, they could still use some frontcourt depth behind Nic Claxton. The Houston Rockets control most of the Nets’ first-round picks going forward, so a complete rebuild is not really possible at the moment. At the same time, however, they might not be quite competitive enough to make noise in a competitive Eastern Conference.
Naz Reid would give the Nets a dynamic frontcourt player who can add shooting and stretch the floor, as well as attack off the bounce. That would also allow him to share the floor with non-shooters Claxton and Ben Simmons, given the latter plays next season.
Reid is not a complete defender yet, especially as a rim protector, but with a strong defensive big like Nic Claxton and all the other talented defenders on the roster, that would not be a big problem for the Nets.
Money is, however. Resigning Cam Johnson will put them in the tax and only leave a $7 million mid-level exception unless they dump some salary. That is not a completely unlikely option, but in the end, it all comes down to what Reid values more, a bigger role or money.
