Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 affordable free agent targets
By Nate Ackert
Keita Bates-Diop
The Minnesota Timberwolves might consider another former-Timberwolf reunion by signing Keita Bates-Diop to an affordable contract this offseason.
Standing at 6-foot-8 with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, he has the ability to play multiple positions and provide valuable defensive contributions. His length and athleticism make him a capable defender who can guard both wing players and some forwards.
With the Timberwolves’ focus on improving their defense, Bates-Diop’s switch ability on defense could be a huge asset, especially if it reduces the number of guards/wings switching onto Rudy Gobert. Bates-Diop was also a sneaky-good 3-point shooter last season, shooting 39.4% from 3, albeit from just under 2 attempts per game.
Smart play equals a smart move
Bates-Diop also possesses a high basketball IQ, which allows him to make smart decisions. His ability to contribute at both ends of the court ultimately earned him a spot in San Antonio’s starting lineup. Bates-Diop has exhibited a level of understanding of the game that enables him to read plays, anticipate movements, and make timely rotations on defense, and high-IQ players are essential for the Wolves to improve next season.
Bates-Diop’s last contract was a 2-year, $3.6 million deal with the Spurs, and with the inevitable arrival of Victor Wembanyama creating uncertainty in the Spurs’ front court, even a slight pay raise for KBD could make him an affordable option for the Wolves.
Considering his versatility, defensive prowess, shooting ability, and affordability, signing Keita Bates-Diop seems like a low-risk, high-reward move for the Minnesota Timberwolves. It would provide them with a valuable asset who can contribute on both ends of the court while adding depth to their roster.
