Timberwolves must monitor Warriors General Manager Bob Myers
By Will Eudy
It is no secret that high-level front office work is a major key to success in professional sports. Players win games, but those players are not assembled and retained without the intuition and savvy of competent and forward-thinking team management.
That is why the Minnesota Timberwolves must keep their pulse on a still-developing situation in the Bay Area of California. The long-tenured and highly respected General Manager of the Golden State Warriors, Bob Myers, announced that he would be stepping down from his position on Tuesday.
After 12 years with the franchise, Myers has decided to step away from the organization that he helped build into a dynasty. He will leave the Warriors organization after overseeing four NBA championships and six trips to the Finals.
The Minnesota Timberwolves should do everything they can to hire Bob Myers.
The two-time executive of the year was a massive reason why Golden State became a perennial dynasty in the NBA. It was Myers’ ingenuity that led to the Warriors drafting Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, as well as signing Kevin Durant in 2016.
With meticulous planning, Myers assembled some of the greatest players in the world in the Bay Area and built a championship contender unlike any other. When Stephen Curry was injured and the Warriors finished with the worst record in the NBA in 2019-20, they were able to quickly return to relevancy thanks in part to the veteran General Manager.
Myers’ career has been marked by overcoming adversity. There were many times where it was thought that the Warriors’ dynasty could be on the brink of implosion, but Myers has answered the call every time to get the most out of what is a historically special group of players.
It is for these reasons that the Minnesota Timberwolves would be wise to do whatever they can to bring Bob Myers in to their front office. Current Timberwolves President and General Manager Tim Connelly is also an ambitious executive, but Myers’ resume is simply unmatched.
There have been rumors floated in recent months that Connelly could be contemplating making a move to the Washington Wizards where he began his career. If he has any intentions of leaving the franchise at all, Minnesota should be bringing in Bob Myers and handing him a blank check.
