Even as the Minnesota Timberwolves are in the final approach to the 2023 NBA Draft, the team continues to make preparations for the big event. Is this making a mountain out of a molehill? Perhaps, but I don’t think that is the case at all. In fact, I believe that the Minnesota Timberwolves actions in the 2023 NBA Draft could have a significant impact on the Timberwolves roster well into the future.
This is not a draft that will deliver an impact for the 2023-24 NBA season for the Timberwolves. But the 2024-25 NBA season? Well now, that could be where we start to reap the benefits. But part of that equation is how often the Minnesota Timberwolves will choose rookies throughout this year’s draft.
How many picks will the Timberwolves make?
We know that the team enters the 2023 NBA Draft armed with one pick in Round 2, the 53rd overall pick. While the team is unlikely to land a starter there, the team does have what appears to be a wise and very successful strategy:
That seems to be very doable at that spot and is likely to result in a nice number of options. But will it be enough? I’m not convinced that the Timberwolves’ front office will be content with just one pick in this draft.
The chances of success for a draft pick act like lottery scratch tickets or even BINGO cards. To improve the chances of winning, simply add more. So the Timberwolves can improve the odds of landing a contributor to the team simply by adding more draft picks. How do they do that?
One option is to buy them. Another option is to trade future draft picks for picks this year. And then, there is the task of finding and negotiating with a team that is willing to part ways with a pick or picks.
How many selections will the Minnesota Timberwolves make in the 2023 NBA Draft? My feeling is that the Timberwolves will choose twice in the draft. How many picks do you believe the Timberwolves will make during the 2023 NBA Draft? Let us know in your comments on Twitter or Facebook.
