Minnesota Timberwolves money matters: How finances dictate future
By Bret Stuter
Thing 1 and now just Thing 2 left to do
And that leaves the Timberwolves front office to focus on their two biggest ‘To Dos,’ on their list. Extensions for Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels. Of course, the negotiations to extend All-Star shooting guard Anthony Edwards was a rather simple matter. Both sides were motivated to get the deal done quickly, and Edwards met the requirement for a Max Contract that could have a projected value of 5 years and $260 million:
The Timberwolves must now turn to an extension for SF Jaden McDaniels, who did not meet those max contract parameters. That means that the value of the McDaniels contract is up for negotiation, and that type of negotiation could be a matter of weeks to resolve.
Robbing Paul to pay Peter
While many will just lobby for the Timberwolves to ‘Pay the man!’ and resolve the matter quickly, keep in mind that the Timberwolves have commitments to Rudy Gobert, Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Naz Reid that already exceed the projected 2024-25 NBA salary cap. Cutting the biggest check possible will only complicate the Minnesota Timberwolves’ financial entanglements further.
While we hope for the best, finances truly will dictate many of the Timberwolves’ next roster moves. In fact, it could be the negotiations over SF Jaden Mcdaniels’ contract extension that ultimately dictates whether or not the Minnesota Timberwolves will be forced to field trade offers for PF Karl-Anthony Towns at the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline.
For the Minnesota Timberwolves, money does matter. How will finances dictate the future of the Timberwolves roster? That does remain to be seen.
