Elite FIBA play proves Timberwolves Anthony Edwards set to trample NBA
By Bret Stuter
If you are a Minnesota Timberwolves fan and are looking for information about the Timberwolves All-Star shooting guard Anthony Edwards, you’ve come to the right place. After wasting over an hour attempting to sum up Anthony Edwards’s performance for Team USA and their pursuit of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, I decided that it was time to take matters into my own hands.
I got the idea from my Dunking with Wolves site co-expert, Will Eudy, who dropped a solid summary about Edwards’s performance against Team Greece earlier today. So, why not make an effort to sum up his performance after all four exhibit games?
So that is just what I did.
Anthony Edwards’s performance in the exhibition bodes well for Team USA this year. The challenge is that for some games, box score statistics are only recorded for a minimum of categories. But what do we have so far?
- Date Opponent Min Pts Reb FG% 3P% Ast Stl Blk +/-
- Aug 7 Puerto Rico 22 15 2 53.8% 25.0% 4 4 1 +18
- Aug 12 Slovenia 15 4 1 + 16
- Aug 13 Spain 9 7 1 + 11
- Aug 18 Greece 17 21 4 50.0% 66.7% 1 1 0 + 19
- Avg per game 19.5 15 4.3 52% 42.9% 1.5 1.3 .2 +16
- Aug 20 Germany (exhibition)
- Aug 26 Team New Zealand – Round 1
- Aug 28 Team Greece – Round 1
- Aug 30 Team Jordan – Round 1
Team USA has gone undefeated in exhibition games so far, but the competition allows no time to relax.
And so, Anthony Edwards has a rare opportunity to elevate his star even higher in the NBA sky. But he is not the only one competing this year. The Timberwolves have players competing for numerous international teams.
If you recall, Round 1 begins on August 25, 2023. Round 2 begins on or after August 29, 2023. September 5, 2023, begins the quarterfinals, and September 8, 2023, will feature the semifinals. Finally, the FIBA WC Championship will be played on September 10, 2023.
Timberwolves swarm to 2023 FIBA WC competition
The Timberwolves have nine participants in the FIBA World Cup competition in varying degrees. To help you track the 2023 FIBA World Cup competition, I have highlighted all qualifying teams.
- Anthony Edwards, Team USA 🇺🇸
- Naz Reid, Select Team USA 🇺🇸
- Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Team Canada 🇨🇦
- Rudy Gobert, Team France 🇫🇷
- Kyle Anderson, Team China 🇨🇳
- Karl-Anthony Towns, Team Dominican Republic 🇩🇴
- Luka Garza, Team Bosnia 🇧🇦
- Matteo Spagnolo, Team Italy 🇮🇹
- Coach Pablo Prigioni, Team Argentina 🇦🇷
Because the Minnesota Timberwolves are saturated with players actively competing for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, we will continue to check in on their progress from time to time. For now, we focused on Team USA and Minnesota Timberwolves’ young star Anthony Edwards.
So far, Edwards is beginning to separate himself and assume a true leadership role on Team USA. And the results are evident as Coach Steve Kerr loved the stability of Team USA in their most recent win over Team Greece.
This team has taken a unique approach to building a team roster this year. Unlike past years, Team USA has kept every player who was named to the roster with no cuts. That has allowed the team to gel more quickly. Of course, when you have Anthony Edwards on the roster, that has become somewhat of a given.
Ultimately, only one team will win the 2023 FIBA World Cup. While the Timberwolves have six players competing on six different international teams, my money is on Anthony Edwards and Team USA to win it all this year.
Many NBA careers skyrocketed after a significantly positive international campaign, and some analysts are already drooling over Anthony Edwards’s 2023-24 NBA season as a result of limited play so far for Team USA. In fact, his Elite FIBA play has some NBA players and analysts believing that Anthony Edwards is poised to trample the NBA during the 2023-24 season.
The competition truly begins to heat up at the end of this month for all 32 international teams. Stay tuned . . .
