Even as the Minnesota Timberwolves have just two weeks before the start of their 2023 Training Camp (September 27), the front office has work to do. But before we go there, why is the Timberwolves Training camp starting so early this year? Well, it just so happens that the Minnesota Timberwolves will compete against the Dallas Mavericks in a pair of preseason games on October 5 and October 7.

It’s all part of the annual NBA participation in the Abu Dhabi Games, held at Etihad Arena on Yas Island. And it’s that early competition that allows the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks to bend the rules and open their training camps a week early.

So who will be competing for the Timberwolves this season?

Timberwolves roster openings

The Timberwolves roster has some openings even at this late date (relative to training camp opening). Those openings are:

  • Standard NBA contract – 1
  • Two-Way NBA contract – 1
  • Exhibit-10 NBA contract – 5

Of the contract openings, the Timberwolves may or may not fill all open slots for Exhibit-10 contracts. Those slots are typically filled by young players who have a remote chance of bumping another player on a standard NBA contract or Two-Way contract. and is based on an impressive showing in training camp and preseason games.

Exhibit-10 contracts allow the player to participate in training camp and have some benefits if that player is assigned to the NBA team’s G-League affiliate. At the time that this article is published, the Minnesota Timberwolves have signed one player to a 2023 Exhibit 10 contract.

The Timberwolves still have some open roster spots. But the clock is ticking. With just two weeks remaining before the Timberwolves open their 2023 Training Camp, look for the team to sign some players pretty quickly.
